Love him or loathe him, you've got to admit that Richard Branson has drive. And guts. And enough ambition to sink a battleship--or perhaps that should be a jumbo jet--or even a whole company of jumbos if the Virgin Atlantic/British Airways debacle (which takes up a huge chunk of this already sizable tome) is anything to go by.

Branson's autobiography makes immensely fascinating reading. Whatever you think of Britain's most famous entrepreneur the odds are that you will enjoy reading his autobiography. You may snort at descriptions of his "poor" childhood--spent eating bread and dripping while living in the kind of house house the majority of us visit on Bank Holidays and attending a "minor" public school. You may groan at memories of early initiative tests: how about being thrown out of the family car and told by his mother to find his way home--at the age of four? You may flinch at accounts of his early business days as an unwashed, unshod hippy magazine publisher living en famille with his staff in the crypt of a West London church. But all in all you'll get to understand where the guy's coming from--man.

And like the man himself, there's no holds barred here. Richard bares his soul, from childhood, school days (cheating at exams), loves and losses (lost one wife when a spot of wife-swapping went drastically wrong--for him) and death-defying adventures (yes, the balloons are all there) to the rise and rise of the Virgin empire. His interviews for Student magazine and the early days of Virgin Music read like a chronicle of popular music and culture in the late 20th century. Famous names bounce off every page. Prepare to be enthralled by the life and times of a walking publicity machine. --Carey Green, Amazon.com --This text refers to the hardcover edition of this title

Produktbeschreibung

Is it too late for you to really be happy? Have you ever reached a milestone or achieved a long sought after goal only to think, "I thought I would be happier." Many people reach a point in their life where they ask themselves some very hard questions. Their current reality has just not lived up to the ideal they once had and now it seems they are stuck in a perpetual rut destined to repeat the same routine every day while longing for vastly different results. Attila Varga knows what it feels like to look in the mirror one day and wonder, "Is this all there is?" He had a good job in a large financial institution, a wonderful family and what most would think was a very nice life, but inside he felt frustrated and uneasy with the idea that this might be as good as life gets. He also saw this frustration among his coworkers and wondered how much potential was being wasted in the corporate world because employers had no idea how to create a better, happier work environment. Why Not? is the story of Attila's journey toward discovering a much happier and more fulfilling life than he ever thought possible. Now you can use these same concepts reach your full potential. The information and concepts in this book will allow you to achieve results better that you ever imagined, faster than you ever believed possible. Once you see the affect they have on your life you will truly know that your best years are yet to come!

Anyone who designs anything to be used by humans--from physical objects to computer programs to conceptual tools--must read this book, and it is an equally tremendous read for anyone who has to use anything created by another human. It could forever change how you experience and interact with your physical surroundings, open your eyes to the perversity of bad design and the desirability of good design, and raise your expectations about how things should be designed.

Kurzbeschreibung

Johannes Gutenberg was our first geek, the original technology entrepreneur, who had to grapple with all the challenges a Silicon Valley startup faces today. Jeff Jarvis tells Gutenberg's story from an entrepreneurial perspective, examining how he overcame technology hurdles, how he operated with the secrecy of a Steve Jobs but then shifted to openness, how he raised capital and mitigated risk, and how, in the end, his cash flow and equity structure did him in. This is also the inspiring story of a great disruptor. That is what makes Gutenberg the patron saint of entrepreneurs.

Jeff Jarvis is the author of "Public Parts: How Sharing in the Digital Age Improves the Way We Work and Live" and "What Would Google Do?: Reverse-Engineering the Fastest Growing Company in the History of the World." He directs the Tow-Knight Center for Entrepreneurial Journalism at the City University of New York Graduate School of Journalism. Jarvis blogs at Buzzmachine.com and writes for the Guardian.
